All our hot water is created by solar panels which give piping hot water in all bathrooms and kitchens, 24 hours a day.
We have showers only, and no baths, to save water.
We have a ducha higiênica (bum shower) next to every toilet, so that guests can use less toilet paper
Our rooms have high quality mosquito screens on the windows and balcony doors, reducing the need for air-conditioning and guests can choose a cheaper room rate if they elect to have the air-conditioner disabled.
We separate all our rubbish, giving the aluminium cans to some local neighbours, who sell them for profit, helping to boost their incomes; the organic waste is composted and used for the garden.
We are planting native species of wild plants in the garden which provide a better environment for native birds, insects and animals such as the Guará wolf, and the Tamarin monkey.
All our furniture is made by local artisans using natural dendê cane, our bedside lamps are made from recycled newspaper and Dave made all the bedroom cupboards himself from re-cycled wood.
We buy locally produced seafood and vegetables
We have a bike which visitors can use
We use eco-friendly compact fluorescent light globes
We use cotton sheets and towels
We use natural coconut soap to wash our dishes
Our washing machine uses hot water which is heated by solar power
We do not use a dryer. There is plenty of space to hang the washing (and plenty of sun)
We make our own non-toxic mosquito repellent from a mixture of herbs that we grow ourselves
