Music:
Music is the life blood of nearly all Brazilians and can be found being performed almost everywhere.
Praia do forte has many bars and restaurants with live music, but what shouldn't be missed is the Phoenix
Jazz Festival which is right on the beach. It is a once yearly event, running in November/December, is free and performers include the cream of Brazil's musicians, and outstanding
international performers.
Olodum, the inventors of Samba-reggae can be seen playing every
Tuesday night in Pelourinho. There are also many other percussion "blocos" who perform in the surrounding streets; its free, goes on all night and shouldn't be missed for the sheer excitement.
Ilê Aiyê
The first Afro-bloco of Brazil, Ilê Aiyê works to raise the consciousness of the Bahian black community.
Teatro
Castro Alves
and
Concha
acústica have
many shows nearly every
night of the week and
feature many top Brazilian
artists.
Buying
CDs:
The best CD shop
we know of in Salvador
is Cana
Brava Records run
by Pardal (a.k.a. Randy)
and is in the old hitoric
centre of Pelhourinho.
His knowledge of Brazilian
music is extensive, especially
regarding the more unusual
and less-known Bahian
artists.
His info portal Bahia-online.net
is a mine of information
for visitors to Salvador
and we highly recommend
that you have a look if
you are planning a trip
here.
Fishing
Local fishermen are used to crazy gringos who like to go fishing with them. They are happy to take anyone who would like to see how they work for a small contribution.
Clay modeling (Argila)
Create sculptures and artifacts from local clay which can be found in abundance on the banks of the river, 5 minutes walk away. Great fun for both kids
and adults!
Surfboarding
There are plenty of good surfing waves on our local beach and on other beaches nearby, such as Praia do Forte, which hosted the Billabong Surf Eco Festival in 2008.
